A silver-white hard metal, symbol V, atomic
number 23, atomic weight 50.94. It occurs in
the rare minerals vanadinite and patronite;
its chief use is in alloying steel to which
it imparts toughness, elasticity, and tensile
strength. It was discovered by Spanish
mineralogist Andres del Rio (1764-1849) 1801,
and isolated by Henry Rosco 1869. Vanadium
compounds (vanadates) are used in the
preparation of aniline black for colouring
glass. The element is named after Vanadis, or
Freya, the Scandinavian goddess of love and
beauty.
